Effects on babies

When you smoke, a harmful substance called nicotine is taken into your body. Nicotine increases heart rate, contract peripheral vascular contract, increases blood pressure, and damages blood vessels. This nicotine becomes a substance called cotinin in the body and is excreted from urine.

The graph below measures how much this cotinine comes out of the child's urine. If the number of children in a household that does not smoke, it indicates how many times more cigarettes smoke.
