Why don't you touch the charm of the old Tokaido of Yokohama?

Last Updated November 6, 2024

The Tokaido is the starting point of travel. Let's walk along the old Tokaido in Yokohama

Ieyasu Tokugawa, who won the battle against Sekigahara in Keicho 5 (1600), developed new policies one after another.
Highway maintenance was also promoted as part of this, and in Keicho 6 (1601), the Tokaido horse riding system was established.
At that time, there were 37 post stations between Edo and Kyoto, and there were two hotels in Yokohama: Kanagawa-juku and Hodogaya-juku.
Tozuka-juku joined in Keicho 9 (1604), and there were three post stations in Yokohama.
In Kanei Gen (1624), 53 post stations were established between Edo and Kyoto, becoming the 53rd Tokaido.
The Tokaido was crowded with daimyo who took part in the shift, officials of the Shogunate, merchants and travelers visiting shrines and temples such as Ise Grand Shrine.
On the way, travelers eat specialty dishes, buy souvenirs, and enjoy a little detour to see the mountain.
The pleasure of traveling has not changed.
The current Tokaido has changed to National Route 1, etc., and still plays a role as Japan's aorta today.
Along the old Tokaido, there are still buildings and shrines and temples that still retain the impression of the post town.
Why don't you walk along the old Tokaido while thinking about the thoughts of each Edo period?
