Akarengasoko Website
Last Updated January 18, 2024
Akarengasoko is a historical brick building built in the late Meiji and early Taisho as a national model warehouse. Since its foundation, it has been used as a logistics base for Yokohama Port, but as Shinko Wharf transferred its logistics functions to other wharfs, Akarengasoko was no longer used as a warehouse and stood quietly as a symbol of the district.
In March 1992, the Akarengasoko, which was called "Hama no Red Brick," which has been popular among many citizens, was preserved as a valuable historical asset and to utilize it as a lively facility for citizens.
After the acquisition, we carried out construction work to reinforce the building and proceeded with studies on how to use it. As a result, we decided to use the Akarengasoko, which has been positioned as a space that creates the bustle of the port and culture. Yokohama City and private business operators (warehouse No. 2 warehouse) carried out internal renovation work based on their utilization plan, and a new facility was opened on April 12, 2002.
