Akarengasoko is a historical brick building built as a model warehouse in the country from late Meiji to early Taisho. Since its foundation, it has been active as a logistics base for Yokohama Port, but as Shinko Wharf handed over its logistics functions to other Wharf, Akarengasoko was no longer used as a warehouse and stood quietly as a symbol of the district.
In March 1992, Yokohama City acquired the Akarengasoko, which was known as "Hama no Red Brick," as a valuable historical asset and used as a bustling facility for citizens.
After the acquisition, we carried out construction work to reinforce the building and examined how to use it. As a result, we completed a plan to utilize the Akarengasoko, which was positioned as a space for creating a bustling port and creating a culture unique to Yokohama and a bustling space for citizens to relax and live. Yokohama City and private businesses (Warehouse No. 2) carried out internal renovation work based on their utilization plan, and a new facility was opened on April 12, 2002.
