The truth of the head of a hundred medicines is…
The founder of the Chinese dynasty "New" Wang Mang
"Sake is the head of one hundred medicines" is a word that Wang Mang the founder of the Chinese dynasty "New" praised sake. Even though more than 2000 years ago, it is widely known today.
In fact, it is said that Wang Mang, who tried to make sake a national monopoly system and increase tax revenue, used it to seek the understanding of the people. (There are various theories)
In recent years, it has been reported that the lower the amount of drinking (pure alcohol), the lower the risk of death, and the way of thinking about drinking has changed.
In this page, we will explain the new concept of drinking!

How to drink alcohol in consideration of health
The Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare (MHLW) has published "Guidelines on Healthy Drinking" to prevent the occurrence of health problems caused by alcohol.
The guidelines show the effects of drinking on the mind and body, as well as the appropriate amount of drinking and drinking behavior.
1: Know the amount of alcohol you usually drink
The effect of alcohol on the mind and body is based on the amount of pure alcohol taken.
First of all, it is important to understand the amount of drinking (pure alcohol) and reduce the risk caused by drinking.
The amount of pure alcohol is the amount of alcohol contained in sake.

In the drinking check tool, if you select a type of alcohol, you can easily measure the total amount of alcohol (pure alcohol) and the time it takes to decompose alcohol.

No. 2: Determine the amount in advance and drink alcohol
In order to avoid excessive drinking, it is important to decide what to drink and how much to drink.
The following table shows the amount of pure alcohol intake (per day) that increases the risk of lifestyle-related diseases and the amount of alcohol that contains 20g of pure alcohol.
Amount of pure alcohol to increase the risk of lifestyle-related diseases
Example of alcohol containing 20g of pure alcohol
Depending on the constitution, age and gender, such as the face tends to turn red with alcohol, a smaller amount or no alcohol is desirable.
Determine the appropriate amount of drinking for yourself, referring to your constitution and the risk of illness caused by drinking.
3: Eat before or during drinking, drink water between drinking.
Enjoy alcohol with a well-balanced diet and relax your alcohol absorption.
Also, take water (or carbonated water) or non-alcoholic drinks between drinking.
4: Make a day when you don't drink alcohol during the week
Alcohol is dependent, so there is a risk that drinking will gradually increase if you continue to drink habitually.
In order to reduce the pure alcohol intake per week, set a day when you do not drink regularly.
Effects of drinking on the mind and body
Relationship between drinking and lifestyle-related diseases incidence
Alcohol travels throughout the body through the blood and is broken down by the liver.
Having a large amount of alcohol over a long period of time affects organs throughout the body, making it easier to develop diseases such as lifestyle-related diseases and alcoholism.
Diseases | Men | Women |
---|---|---|
Stroke (hemorrhagic) | 150g/week (20g/day) | A little bit |
Stroke (cerebral infarction) | 300g/week (40g/day) | 75g/week (11g/day) |
High blood pressure | A little bit | A little bit |
Stomach cancer | A little bit | 150g/week (20g/day) |

Based on health-conscious drinking guidelines (some excerpts). The numerical value per day is the reference value when divided by 7 based on the numerical value of the research results.
Drinking by women
Women are more susceptible to alcohol than men for the following reasons:
- In general, since the physique is smaller than men, the amount of water in the body is low and the amount of alcohol that can be decomposed is low.
- The action of female hormones is susceptible to alcohol and increases the risk of women-specific diseases such as breast cancer.
Alcohol enters the baby's body through the placenta during pregnancy and through breast milk during breastfeeding.
Drinking during pregnancy and breastfeeding can adversely affect premature birth, miscarriage, andbaby/infant development.
Drinking by the elderly
As you grow older, the amount of water in the body decreases compared to when you are young, and the same amount of alcohol becomes more susceptible to drunk.
In addition, elderly drinkers have the following risks:
- If the amount of drinking exceeds a certain amount, the possibility of developing dementia increases.
- Increasing falls, fractures, and muscle loss (risk of sarcopenia) due to drinking.
To maintain your health, be aware of the following points when drinking alcohol.
- Know the amount of alcohol you usually drink
- Determine the amount in advance and drink alcohol
- Eat before or during drinking, drink water between drinking.
- Make a day when you don't drink alcohol during a week
