Potatoes come from Hodogaya

Did you know that Hodogaya Ward was once the country's famous potato production area? Potatoes are rich in nutrients and are excellent ingredients that can be used in a variety of dishes. This page introduces potato dishes as well as the relationship between potatoes and Hodogaya Ward.

Potatoes were introduced to Hodogaya Ward in the late Edo period.

Jagaraimo (Jagaraimo) brought in from Koshu (Yamanashi Prefecture) was originally cultivated for private use, but as the cultivation method was improved and research at the agricultural experimental station in Hodogaya Ward.

Hodogaya Imo, which is now cultivated in Asahi Ward, Seya Ward, and Minami Ward, was shipped from Hodogaya Station to Hokkaido and elsewhere, and became famous as a high-quality seed potato. Potatoes from all over Japan may also have grown from the old "Hodogaya Imo".

In the Meiji era, potato prices had fallen, but as a remedy was the starch manufacturing industry, a processed product that made use of potatoes, became popular. It became an important industry in the Meiji period, such as being sold to Odawara as a material for kamaboko.

After the war, the production of potatoes itself decreased due to the effects of urbanization. However, even today, the second largest crop produced in the ward is the second largest producer of cabbage.

Potatoes are useful ingredients that can be used in a variety of dishes. In terms of nutrition, it is rich in potassium and vitamin C, and vitamin C, which is fragile when heated, is hard to break with potatoes.

At Hodogaya Ward, we worked to get people familiar with such excellent ingredients.

In June 2003, potato digging was carried out in a field near Nishiya Station. Twenty4 participants gathered by open call for participants and sweated the harvest while being covered in soil in a spacious field.

Before digging potatoes, Mr. Shirai, a producer, talked about the history of potatoes and how to grow them, and freshly boiled potatoes were served, and the participants were so popular that they said "Replace!" .

~ Relationship with Hodogaya and "Potato Yachijin"

Potatoes have the image of Hokkaido, but in fact it is said that Hodogaya that spread potatoes nationwide.
At the end of the Edo period, "Jagaraimo" was brought from Koshu (Yamanashi Prefecture) to Hodogaya, and it was originally cultivated for private use. Gradually improved cultivation methods and research at agricultural laboratories in the prefecture in Hodogaya Ward, production became popular.
In this way, "Hodogaya Imo" was shipped nationwide and became famous as a high-quality seed potato.
The potatoes you are eating may also have grown from the old "Hodogaya Imo".
In order to make such potatoes a specialty of Hodogaya, in commemoration of the 80th anniversary of the constituency, the Food Culture and Energy Subcommittee issued a collection of 80 kinds of potato cooking recipes, "Potato Yajuchin".
