Tsurumi Ward currently has a population of about 296,000, and the area around Tsurumi Station is positioned as one of Yokohama's subcenters.
Along the Tsurumi River flowing through the ward, the use of industrial land to residential areas is progressing as a "town of rivers", and it has become a vibrant city where small and medium-sized factories, commercial areas, and residential areas are mixed. It is also an internationally rich area where many foreigners live. In the coastal area “Umi no Machi”, one of the largest international research base, Yokohama Science Frontier, is being developed in the Suehirocho area. In the hills “hill town” where residential areas are connected, town development utilizing nature and history is progressing.
Tsurumi fire department protects these various aspects of the ward 24 hours a day by one head office and nine fire departments (Sueyoshi, Daikokucho, Irifune, Yako, Terao, Kishiya, Namamugi, Komaoka and Tsurumisuijyou).
