"The Barley Incident,"
On August 21, 1862 (1862), the procession of Hisamitsu Shimazu, the father of the Satsuma feudal lord, was passing through Ikumugi Village, and one of the four foreigners who got into the procession on a horse, Richardson, U.K. Merchant, was killed by a guard samurai.
The killing of foreigners during the turbulent period at the end of the Tokugawa period developed from compensation to the Satsu British War. It had a significant impact on Japan's diplomacy since then. In 1883, Sozo Kurokawa of Tsurumi mourned Richardson's death and invested in private money to prevent the incident from weathering, and built a monument to the barley incident. A local honoring party holds a commemorative festival on August 21 every year. Registered cultural property of Yokohama City.
The Raw Wheat Case Reference Museum is a private museum that displays more than 140 domestic and foreign materials related to the Raw Wheat Case collected over 18 years. There is also a museum of sake next to it.
