History of Sakae Ward

Last Updated October 12, 2018

Sakae Ward was separated from Totsuka Ward in 1986. The history of Sakae Ward can be traced back to a long time, especially in the Kamakura period, the rich countryside of the Ita River basin was responsible for food production and is believed to have played an important role in military policy for the Tohoku region. With the enforcement of the municipal system in 1889, Hongo-mura, Kamakura-gun (Kasama, Kosugaya, Koda, Katsura, Nakano, Kajigaya, Ueno), Toyotamura (Iijima, Naganuma, Kanai, Taya, Nagaodai, Kanai, Taya, Nagaodai, Kojaku, and later) was established in 19 years.

In 1939, Hongo Village and Toyotamura were transferred to Yokohama City and became part of Totsuka Ward.

For reference, the population of both villages just before the transfer (as of December 31, 1938) was 2,978 in Toyotamura (including Shimo-Kurata and Uekurada) and 4,316 in Hongo Village. (according to Kanagawa Statistical Report)

From the 1940s to the early 1950s, large-scale residential area development centered on hills was carried out, the population rapidly increased, and it was transformed into a residential city. In response to this rapid increase in population and promote more familiar administration in the region, the reorganization of administrative districts was carried out on November 3, 1986, and Sakae Ward was born.
