Bicycle insurance

When riding a bicycle in Yokohama city, be sure to subscribe to insurance (personal liability insurance, etc.) that can compensate for this damage if you have caused damage to the other party due to a bicycle accident.
If you are under the age of 18 rides a bicycle, your guardian must have insurance for a bicycle accident.

Main traffic rules for bicycles

When riding a bicycle, follow the traffic rules and be careful not to get into an accident.

  • Bicycles are a member of the car. Please drive the left side of the road in the same direction as your car or motorcycle.
  • It's dangerous to jump out. Be sure to stop where there is a "stop" sign.
  • Pedestrians have priority on the sidewalk. Bicycles can be used on the sidewalk when there is a sign that allows bicycles to pass, or if you are under 13 years old or over 70 years old.
  • It is very dangerous to run without the light on at night. Let's turn on the light when it gets dark.
  • Do not drive while operating a smartphone or the like.
  • To protect your head, wear a riding helmet.

Parking lot

If you go out by bicycle or motorcycle, please use the bicycle parking lot.
Bicycles and motorcycles cannot be parked in public places such as roads, as it hinders the passage of pedestrians and emergency vehicles. Bicycles and motorcycles left on the road may be moved to storage locations according to the regulations.
You will need the following items to be returned.

  1. Items that can be used to verify their identity, such as insurance cards and passports
  2. Fees (bicycle: 1,500 yen, bike: 3,000 yen)
  3. Keys for bicycles and motorcycles

When carrying a child

A child seat is required to carry a child on a bicycle. When putting your child on a child seat, be aware of the following:

  • When carrying your child, you have to run on the left side of the road.
  • Keep in mind that you can stop safely. Bicycles are heavy and cannot be stopped suddenly.
  • Let's put a helmet on children. Also, let's wear helmets for adults.
  • Be sure to put on your seat belt. If you don't wear your seat belt, your child may fall off your bicycle.
  • Don't leave your bicycle with your child on board. It is very dangerous if the bicycle falls down on it.
  • Children can be put on a child seat before entering elementary school. Elementary school students are not allowed to ride.
  • Even if you have a child seat, you can ride up to two people. Don't carry three or more people.
  • Don't drive with your child. It is dangerous because it interferes with the operation of the handle.
