Bicycle insurance
When riding a bicycle in Yokohama city, be sure to purchase insurance (personal liability insurance, etc.) that can compensate for this damage if you damage the other party due to a bicycle accident.
If a person under the age of 18 rides a bicycle, the guardian must take out insurance for a bicycle accident.
Major traffic rules for bicycles
When riding a bicycle, follow the traffic rules and be careful not to get into an accident.
- Bicycles are friends of cars. Pass the left side of the road in the same direction as a car or motorcycle.
- It's dangerous to jump out. Be sure to stop where there is a "stop" sign.
- Pedestrians have priority on the sidewalk. You can pass on the sidewalk by bicycle when there is a sign indicating that you can pass by bicycle, or when you are under 13 years old or over 70 years old.
- It is very dangerous to run without turning on the lights at night. Let's turn on the light when it gets dark.
- Do not drive while operating a smartphone or the like.
- Wear a riding helmet to protect your head.
Parking lot
Please use the bicycle parking lot when you go out by bicycle or motorcycle.
Bicycles and motorcycles cannot be parked in public places such as roads, as they hinder the passage of pedestrians and emergency vehicles. Bicycles and motorcycles left on the road may be moved to storage locations according to regulations.
The following items are required to be returned.
- Items that can identify you, such as insurance cards and passports
- Fee (bicycle: 1,500 yen, bike: 3,000 yen)
- Keys for bicycles and motorcycles

When carrying a child
A child seat is required to carry a child on a bicycle. When putting your child on a child seat, be aware of the following:
- You have to run on the left side of the road even when you are carrying your child.
- Let's keep in mind the speed of stopping safely. A child riding bicycle is heavy and cannot stop suddenly.
- Let your child wear a helmet. Also, adults should wear a helmet.
- Be sure to put on your seat belt. If you don't put on your seat belt, your child may fall off your bicycle.
- Don't leave your bicycle with your child on it. It's very dangerous if the bicycle falls on it.
- You can put it on your child seat until you enter elementary school. Elementary school students are not allowed to ride.
- Even if you have a child seat, you can get up to two people. You shouldn't ride more than 3 people.
- Don't drive with a child. It is dangerous because it interferes with the operation of the handle.
