Information on Yokohama City Library

Registration (issuance of library card)

A person who can register

  • People who live in Yokohama, commute, or go to school
  • People who live in Kamakura, Kawasaki, Zushi, Fujisawa, Yamato, Yokosuka, and Machida

Registration and rental are free of charge.
Yokohama City Library has a total of 18 buildings, one in one ward.
Library cards can be used in all libraries in the city. When registering, please submit "application form for a library card" along with identification documents (resident card, student ID card, etc.) to the registration counter. A library card will be issued on the spot.
You can also register online from the library homepage. In that case, we will not give you the card. Please display your digital library card on your smartphone or other device.
Library cards cannot be loaned to others. The expiration date is 5 years. At the time of registration renewal, we will check the registration details.

Loans

You can borrow up to 10 books per person on the 14 opening days.
Please bring your library card and books to circulation desk. After the loan procedure, you will receive a receipt stating the library card number, the number of the book you are borrowing, and the return deadline. 
If you forget your library card, you will not be able to borrow books.
Books with the label "Inside the building" and the latest issue of magazines cannot be borrowed. Please use it in the museum.
You can extend the loan only once. If a reservation is made or the return is delayed, the loan cannot be extended.

Returned

Books borrowed from Yokohama City Library can be returned to any City Library. Please return only books to return counter. Please do not return it directly to the bookshelf. You don't need a library card or receipt.
If the library is closed, return only the books to "book return box". "book return box" is not available during the year-end and New Year holidays.
If you do not return the borrowed book for a long time, you may not be able to borrow and apply for reservations.

Search

All Yokohama City Library books can be searched from the user search machine or library website.
The user search machine can be used on both the keyboard and the screen touch panel. If you don't know, please ask at the counter.

Reservation

If the book you want to read is not on the bookshelf, you can make a reservation (up to 6 books per person).

You can borrow other books from Yokohama City Library in the nearby Yokohama City Library. Reservations can be made from the counter, user search machine, or library website. A password must be registered in advance when making a reservation from a user search machine or library homepage.

If you have registered your e-mail address, you will be notified by e-mail when the reserved book is ready. If you are unable to borrow a loan, the library will contact you.
From the day you confirm that the reserved book is ready, reserve 7 opening days.
You can also borrow books from Kanagawa Pref.Library.

E-book service

You can rent and return e-books using a PC, smartphone, or tablet connected to the Internet.
It is available to those who live in Yokohama, commute to school, and have a valid library card from Yokohama City Library.
You can borrow up to 2 points for 14 days. When the return deadline comes, it will be automatically returned.
If you do not finish reading in 14 days, you can extend the loan period only once unless you have a reservation.
If the book you want to read is on loan, you can make up to two points.

Public wireless LAN and Internet browsing service

Public wireless LAN service is available in all City Library.
Email authentication or SNS authentication may be required.
In addition, each library has a PC that allows you to browse the Internet.
Please apply at the counter.

Copy

The copier is coin-operated. 10 yen per black and white copy. Color copies are 50 yen per sheet for B5, B4 and A4, and 80 yen for A3.

Reference

This is a service that uses library materials to help you find research, materials and information. Please ask at the counter.

Others

Books and magazines can be borrowed by mail to those who have physical or mental disabilities and have difficulty visiting the library. Please register at Chuo-toshokan.

Requests from the Library

You are not allowed to eat, drink or smoke in the library. However, hydration is possible in a closed container with a lid (such as a plastic bottle or water bottle).
 
Do not disturb other users (such as speaking loudly) in the library.
Please handle the books in the library carefully.
If the book is lost or soiled, you will be compensated.
