What is food loss?
Food loss refers to food that is originally eaten, such as leftover food, food that was bought in large quantities at bargain prices but could not be eaten (untiled foods), and foods that have too thick peeled vegetables (excess removal). Food.
Why is it necessary to reduce food loss?
According to a survey by the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries, the so-called "food loss" that is still eaten in Japan but discarded is estimated to be 5.7 million tons per year (estimated by the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries in FY2019 (outside site)).
This is much higher than the world's total food aid of approximately 4.2 million tons.
It is necessary to reduce food loss from effective use of important resources and consideration for environmental impact.
How much food loss is generated in Yokohama City?
The burnable garbage from households in Yokohama contains approximately 93,000 tons of food loss per year (estimated in fiscal 2020), which is equivalent to 25 kilograms per citizen.
For example,
Converting 25 kilograms of food loss into rice balls...About 250 pieces
And if you convert it into money....It is calculated that about 19,000 yen of food is thrown away annually.
In this way, the problem of food loss involves various "wastefulness".

Yokohama City is promoting “food drive activities” that utilize food that is still eaten but discarded as one of the initiatives to reduce food loss.
