Necessity of a rooftop garden
In Kohoku Ward, urbanization has led to a decline in greenery.
The green coverage (*1), which was 33.4% in fiscal 1992, decreased to 24.1% in fiscal 2019.
The rate of decline in Kohoku Ward is far above the rate of decline in Yokohama, indicating that the decline in green in Kohoku Ward is progressing rapidly.
Due to the decrease in greenery, the heat island phenomenon (* 2) progresses, and the temperature in urban areas increases, which has become a social problem. In order to solve these problems, Kohoku Ward has implemented rooftop greening as a part of experimental project.
By implementing rooftop greening, plants can shield sunlight and heat insulation effects by soil are obtained, heat is suppressed from entering the building in summer, heat is not released outside in winter, and it is easy for the lower floor to spend. Environment. By suppressing the use of air conditioning and taking energy-saving measures, it also leads to a reduction in carbon dioxide.
In addition, the transpiration effect of plants (discharging water from leaves) has the effect of cooling the surrounding air. In summer, green spaces can be up to 20 degrees lower than concrete surfaces. For this reason, rooftop greening is expected to be one of the measures against the heat island phenomenon.
In addition, the greenery on the roof creates peace and moisture, making it a place for familiar environmental learning.
※1 Green coverage: This is one of the ways to grasp the total amount of greenery. When viewed from above by aerial photograph, the ratio of land covered with greenery. In addition to forest land, it includes grasslands and agricultural land.
※2 Heat Island phenomenon: The heat island phenomenon is a phenomenon in which the temperature in the city center rises like an island compared to the suburbs due to the artificialization of the ground surface (buildings, pavements, etc.) and the increase in artificial waste heat associated with energy consumption. It is called like this because the high temperature appears just like an island.
