The need for a rooftop garden

As urbanization progresses in Kohoku Ward, greens are decreasing.
The green coverage (*1), which was 33.4% in fiscal 1992, fell to 24.1% in FY2019.
The rate of decline in Kohoku Ward is much higher than the rate of decline in Yokohama, indicating that the green decline in Kohoku Ward is progressing rapidly.
Due to the decrease in greenery, the heat island phenomenon (* 2) has progressed, and the temperature in urban areas has become a social problem, such as rising temperatures in urban areas. To solve these problems, Kohoku Ward implemented rooftop greening as experimental project.
By implementing rooftop greening, sunlight shielding by plants and the insulation effect of soil can be obtained, suppressing heat from entering the building in summer, and in winter, heat does not escape outside, making it easy for the lower floors It becomes an environment. By suppressing the use of air conditioning and heating and saving energy, it also leads to a reduction of carbon dioxide.
It also has the effect of cooling the surrounding air by the transpiration of plants (dispersing water from the leaves). In summer, green spaces can be up to 20 degrees lower than concrete surfaces. For this reason, rooftop greening is expected to be one of the measures against the heat island phenomenon.
In addition, the greenery on the roof creates peace and moisture, making it a place for familiar environmental learning.

※1 Green coverage: This is one of the ways to grasp the total amount of green, when viewed from the sky with aerial photographs. In addition to forest land, grasslands and agricultural land.
※2 Heat island phenomenon: The heat island phenomenon is a phenomenon in which the temperature in the city center is higher in an island-like manner than in suburban areas due to the artificialization of the ground surface (buildings, pavement, etc.) and the increase in artificial waste heat due to energy consumption. The place where the temperature is high appears just like an island, so it is called.
