As the eastern base of Kamakura in the Middle Ages

It prospered as the base of the Kamakura Shogunate, the branch of Hojo Kanazawa Hojo, and as a base for shipping in the Shogunate.
It was during the Kamakura period that famous temples such as Choinagiri-dori and Kanazawabunko, designated as nationally designated historic sites, were created.

As a proximity to the main trunk line Tokaido, along with Kamakura, it is recognized as a historic site and famous place, and it will be written in various contributions and poetry as one of the most scenic spots in the southern Kanto region.
