What is CITYNET?

CITYNET (Asia-Pacific Intercity Cooperation Network) (outside site) is a non-profit, international organization dedicated to improving and eliminating urban issues in the Asia-Pacific region. Founded in 1987, the original number of members was 26. However, now there are 154 member cities and organizations (as of January, 2023).
The secretariat is located in the Seoul Special City in the Republic of Korea, and the Citynet Yokohama Project Office is also established in this city as an organization responsible for international cooperation projects.
CityNet operates in three clusters (subcommittees), namely, Disaster, SDGs, and Climate Change with the aim of connecting all stakeholders in cities and providing concrete solutions to urban problems faced by cities in the Asia-Pacific region. (The City is one of the leading cities of the SDGs Cluster.)
In 1995, CityNet was granted special consultative status with the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) at the United Nations. In 2002, the United Nations Habitat Scroll of Honour was given for its role in intercity cooperation and networking with local governments, NGOs, and the Government Development Agency in Asia.

Relationship between Yokohama City and CITYNET

This city has been a member of Citynet since its establishment in 1987. It has served as the chair city for the six terms since being elected as the chair at the first CityNet General Assembly (1989). At the 7th CityNet General Meeting (2013), the city was recognized for its contributions to date, was elected as an honorary chairman city, and is still serving as an honorary chair city.
Furthermore, this city served as the chair city of the Disaster Prevention Cluster from 2013 to 2022, and has made international contributions by conducting disaster-prevention seminars, accepting training and inspections from member cities, dispatching experts, and implementing long-term support projects based on memorandums of understanding. From 2023, as the chair city of the SDGs Cluster, we will further proactively advance our ongoing efforts to achieve the SDGs.
