When getting married in Japan

•If you want proof that a foreigner is married and you are married in Japan, submit the following documents to the ward office's Family Registry Division.

1."marriage registration form" (a document that informs you of marriage)
You can get it at the ward office.
2."certificate to contract marriage" (a document certifying that the person can marry)
You can get it at the embassy or consulate. Japanese translation is also required.
※People in countries without "certificate to contract marriage" need another document.

•After submitting your documents to the ward office, it may take some time to prove your marriage in Japan. If you want to know more about it, please ask the ward office.
•If you inform the embassy or consulate that you are going to get married and marry in your own way, you do not need to submit documents to the ward office.

When divorced (stop marriage)

•If a foreigner and a foreigner divorce in Japan, what is required is different according to the law of the divorced person's country.
(e.g., when it is necessary to submit a document called "divorce registration form" to the ward office's Family Registry Division, or to inform the embassy or consulate)
•Please ask the ward office, embassy, or consulate.
