Norovirus information for building-related businesses

Last Updated March 6, 2019

Norovirus is highly infectious, so the infection may spread in large-scale facilities where many people gather, such as buildings.

It is important to take preventive and spread prevention measures to prevent the spread of infection.

Basic knowledge of norovirus

[Main Symptoms] Nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea

[Time of occurrence] Although it occurs throughout the year, it is known that it is particularly common in winter.

[Infection Route] Infection spreads from vomit and feces of people infected with norovirus.

When vomiting occurs in the facility

The vomit contains a large amount of norovirus. If vomiting is not thoroughly wiped out or disinfected when vomiting occurs, the virus will drift in the air after drying.

It may enter the human body through the mouth and nose. If vomiting occurs in the facility, it is necessary to take appropriate measures in consideration of the possibility of norovirus infection.

★Vomit treatment method★

[How to make disinfectant]

Alcohol has little effect on disinfecting norovirus. Always use chlorine bleach (component: sodium hypochlorite).

Using commercially available chlorine bleach is diluted according to the application.

※The diluted disinfectant eliminates the disinfectant effect over time. Please do not keep it, and make it each time you disinfect.

★Management of ventilation and air conditioning equipment★
When vomiting occurs, etc., ventilate so that the virus does not stay indoors. Make sure to take in fresh air by opening windows and driving ventilation equipment.

In addition, ventilation equipment will be operated and air will be replaced in places where damage is likely to cause expansion (toilets, etc.).

[In order to provide effective ventilation]

1 To make the flow of air in the room, make two or more air entrances and exits as diagonally as possible.
(When using a ventilation fan, open a little window located diagonally from the ventilation fan as much as possible to create an air entrance.)
2. Check periodically to see if the ventilation equipment can be operated effectively.
(Confirm that the filter at the exhaust port is not clogged, that the exhaust port is blocked, or that there are any obstacles that obstruct the flow of air.)
3 Check the flow of air during ventilation from normal times.

In order to prevent the spread of infection

★Sharing processing information such as vomit.★

When vomit is processed, contact the owner and manager of the facility as well as the cleaning staff and tenant, and share the information throughout the facility.

By sharing information, it is easier to identify the cause when an infection occurs in the facility. If the cause can be identified quickly, measures can be taken to prevent the spread of infection.

★Hygiene education for employees★

Make sure that cleaning staff and tenant staff know how to treat vomit and other information on how to treat vomit and information on norovirus outbreaks.

(Holding hygiene seminars, preparing and distributing manuals when vomiting occurs, etc.)
