Urban Development

The City of Yokohama has promoted comprehensive urban development by taking advantage of local characteristics in order to solve various urban problems the city has faced.
In the waterfront areas, port facilities have been moved in order to cope with larger and more modern ships. The vacant lot was used to create an operational, commercial and cultural complex for the vitalization of economy and the enforcement of the independence of Yokohama. The MINATO MIRAI 21 District was thus developed so that it would share the capital functions with Tokyo. In addition, harmony with nature, consideration of urban design, and multiple development for the proximity of workplaces to workers' homes have resulted in the development of distinctive areas such as Kohoku New Town and Kanazawa Industrial Complex, which are regarded as world models.
