Last update date September 16, 2022

Japonica

Miyakotanago is a beautiful small fish of freshwater fish belonging to the family Carinaceae family, about 4 to 5 cm in length.

The habitat was said to be almost the entire Kanto region, but it is now on the verge of extinction due to the wave of urbanization, and it was designated as a national natural monument on June 25, 1974.

In Yokohama City, in May 1976, it was confirmed that it inhabits Gonda Pond in Katsuta-cho, Tsuzuki-ku, and was deposited at the Prefectural Freshwater Fish Proliferation Test Station to avoid extinction due to development.

The test site succeeded in raising a large amount of fry in the fall of 1985.

Kohoku New Town, where Miyakotanago was found, is also close to Jikecho, and it is estimated that many Miyakotanago once inhabited Jikecho.
