Yamate Park (Naka Ward)

Last update date April 1, 2019

This park is the first Western-style park in Japan, created by foreign residents in Yokohama in 1870 (Meiji 3). Since then, it has been used as a park exclusively for foreigners for 80 years, and after the war it has been a place for sports and relaxation for Yokohama citizens.
It is also the birthplace of modern tennis in Japan, and there is Yokohama-Yamate Tennis Museum in the park.
In addition, Himalayas grass was planted for the first time in Japan and spread throughout the country.

It was designated as a scenic spot in March 2004, and was certified as a modern industrial heritage in February 2009.
A part of the park land has been loaned free of charge from state-owned land.
