Yamashita Park (Naka Ward)

Last update date August 4, 2023

Rinkai Park was born from the Great Kanto Earthquake Reconstruction Project.

It is the most famous park in Yokohama. It was made by reclaiming debris from the Great Kanto Earthquake. It is a park with many attractions such as a view to the sea, roses on the sinking floor flower beds, singing monuments and monuments.

Opened in March 1930, Yamashita Park is said to be the most known park in Yokohama. As a reconstruction project after the Great Kanto Earthquake, rubble in the city was reclaimed in four years from 1925, and the upper part was covered with high-quality soil, and the basic shape of the park was completed. At that time, the current sinking flower bed was a pool of boats, and the small bridge next to Hikawa Maru still retains its remnants. Five years after the opening of the park, a reconstruction exposition was held in March 1935, where whales swam in the boat pool, and the pavilions that are now lined up, showing a very lively atmosphere. After the war, it was requisitioned by the U.S. Army, but was lifted gradually from 1954, and the redevelopment was completed in 1961, and it is almost the current figure.

Later, in line with the Yokohama Exposition held in 1988, an underground parking lot and a park at the top of the park.
With the cooperation of Sakakura Design, who designed the doll house, a world plaza designed the road leading to six continents, and a fun large staircase with cascade reminiscent of Guel Park in Barcelona have been developed, creating new attractions. I am.

There are many monuments in Yamashita Park, but typical examples include the "guardian deity of water" given by the city of San Diego, the Statue of a Little Girl With Red Shoes On, which is familiar with nursery rhymes, and the Song Monument of Seamen.
At the western end of the park is the Indian Water Tower donated in 1937 by the Indian Association in Japan. Designed by Masashi Washisu, the fourth-generation architecture section manager of Yokohama-shi, this monument, with detailed design, is of high value as a modern architecture in Yokohama.
In addition, the park land has been granted free loan from state-owned land.

About Rose Garden <Future Rose Garden>

Redevelopment work was completed on April 1, 2016 and reopened. You can see three-dimensional and diverse rose productions with vine roses and standardized roses.

Inheriting the rose strains so far, inheriting the history, and planting new vines, it has become a rose garden with highlights throughout the year.

Roses have been said to be time-consuming, but roses that are resistant to pests and insects are used so that visitors can enjoy roses at home using this rose garden as a model. We aim to be a rose garden that is easy to do. The rose garden in Yamashita Park is a symbolic garden in Yokohama that passes the history of roses from the past to the future.
