In quiet farm village life

In the Edo era, border of Musashi and Sagami lay in the north and south in the center of current Konan Ward, and there were many villages on both sides. Afterwards, by the enforcement of municipality organization of the Meiji period, Nagano village, Kusaka-mura, 3 villages of Ooka-mura are born. It may be said that this is the origin of current Konan Ward. We took role of foundation (foundation) of modern nation in those days at the same time as this ground was farm village area.

The 1859 (Ansei 6) Yokohama opening of a port. Yokohama Port played an active part as window of trade of Japan, and life of village greatly changed, too. We shipped farm products, and product economy to get cash has begun to extend to this ground. It changed for production of vegetables and sericulture that kara city area with rice and wheat cereals-centered product demanded and diversified. Selective breeding such as potato or paisukezaru (with colander of shallow Hachigata that we knit out of bamboo, we were used for transportation such as fall, the earth and sand or coal on the sky bottle stick), product improvement came to be carried out under trade promotion and the industrial promotion after Sino-Japanese, the Russo-Japanese War lively.

Village of Konan full of cultivation of flower

Cultivation of flower

New city area increased around Yokohama Port, and new industry was born. That is cultivation of western-style flower. Warm climate of Konan was suitable for flower cultivation such as rose, peony, tulip, narcissus, yellow oxeye, and Ooka, bamboo grass bottom, around Hino seemed to be one side flower gardens in those days. Greenhouse cultivation was carried out, too, and, in the receiver, Konan flower market was born in Kamiooka in in Tokyo and 1933 (Showa 8), too. However, such a flower industry declines with war, too.

The Great Kanto Earthquake, World War II and the present age

By the Great Kanto Earthquake generated in 1923 (Taisho 12), most of the buildings of Konan area collapsed. However, for the revival period, attempt to new business was carried out lively. Pottery is started in Kamiooka, and the textile printing (nassen) work is born one after another in vast Okagawa basin. Furthermore, enterpriser who opened vineyard as Tourist Farm appeared. Afterwards, Shonan electric railway (current: Keikyu) is opened in Kamiooka in 1930 (Showa 5). Yokohama prison is completed in 1936 (Showa 11).
All is repainted in war regime under World War II and is defeated. However, from postwar impoverishment, new life began again. High growth, great change called population rapid increase let figure of Konan greatly undergo a complete change.
