Konan Ward was newly established in Minami Ward as a result of the reorganization of administrative districts on October 1, 1969.
Ward names were recruited from the general public, and were selected and decided by the deliberation of the ward name deliberation committee, from Konan Ward, Okaku, Hino Ward, etc. of the application ward name proposals.
Located in the southern part of Yokohama City, it is a rugged terrain consisting of the lowlands of the Okagawa and Kashio River basins and a plateau that extends the Tama Hills. In the old days, it was a rural area surrounded by natural hills, but the urban area was developed along the Kamakura Highway. The Shonan Electric Railway (now the Keikyu Main Line) was opened in 1930, and Kami-Ooka Station was opened, and development along the railway line progressed. From around 1937, a textile printing factory opened along the Okagawa River, and from around 1960, residential land development and urbanization progressed, and large-scale development continued thereafter. In response to these urbanizations, urban infrastructures such as arterial roads, transportation networks, and sewers is being developed.
Many of the names of Konan Ward are named after Tando and valleys, such as Okubo, Kaminagaya, and Serigaya.
