About the creative neighborhood

Last Updated February 21, 2024

Since 2004, Yokohama City has been making use of Yokohama's greatest strength, its unique history and culture surrounding the port, making use of the "creativity" of art and culture to create new value and appeal of the city based on the measures of "Creative City Yokohama". As part of this measure, we are promoting the creation of a creative neighborhood, mainly in the coastal area of the city center, and in collaboration with private businesses engaged in creative activities, we will utilize historical buildings, warehouses, public spaces, etc. as a “creative neighborhood base”.

List of Bases for Creative Areas

NPO BankART1929 has "BankART Station" (Shin-Takashima Station basement 1st floor warehouse) and "BankARTKAIKO" (Kitanakadori, Naka-ku) with the aim of promoting the accumulation of artists and creators, revitalizing the area and creating new bustle. We operate as a base. We carry out various creative activities centered on artist-in-residence (AIR) and disseminate it both domestically and internationally.

Since 2021, the museum has been closed for specific ceiling construction and the selection of the next operator.

◆From Monday, December 25, 2023, we will make use of the value and attractiveness of the former Daiichi Bank Yokohama Branch.
We are recruiting operators for long-term use of creative methods and content.

"Oimatsu Kaikan", which opened as a municipal wedding hall in 1993, has been used as a performing arts creation base "Sudden slope studio" since 2006 after closing in 2005. We have prepared a rehearsal area for performing arts such as theater and dance, taking advantage of the structure of a wedding hall, such as a hall with a high ceiling, and a community room used by local people.
In addition, we provide advice and production support to artists as a "rehearsal hall not only for rehearsals," we also provide advice to artists and production support. The supporting artists have won the Kishida Kunio Drama Award, which is regarded as a gateway to new playwrights, and has become a supporting role in Japanese performing arts.

Elephant's nose terrace

Zo-no-hana Terrace is a free resting facility in Zou-no-Hana-District, the port of Yokohama's port. In the 150th anniversary of the opening of the port, it was maintained with Zounohana Park and opened in June 2009.
In addition to exhibiting art works on a daily basis, such as the 6-meter-long symbol object "Perry" by Noboru Tsubaki, an artist participating in the "Yokohama Triennale 2001", as well as performances such as music, dance, theater performances and video screenings, symposiums and lectures.
In addition, there is a café inside, which offers a wide variety of drinks and original foods made with local ingredients. "Elephant's soft serve ice cream" shaped like an elephant face is very popular. Taking advantage of the characteristics of an art space, artists also design costumes for cafe staff.

Yokohama City is promoting initiatives to regenerate the city with the power of cultural arts in the first yellow and Hinodecho districts, where many illegal specialty restaurants were once located.
Local residents, police, government, companies, universities, etc. will work together to hold the Koganecho Bazaar, a community-linked art project, in 2008. As an art event with a view to revitalizing the town, utilizing studios under the Keikyu elevated and vacant stores in the district, it attracted great attention from all over the country. Based on these results, in 2009, the NPO "Koganecho Area Management Center" was established mainly by local people under the theme of "town development by art".
NPOs are at the center of our efforts, and are promoting "safe and secure town development" while strengthening activities related to daily town development, such as art and other event businesses and cooperation with local communities.
