About termites and ants

Last update date September 22, 2021

From spring to autumn, a consultation is received saying, "A lot of wings have appeared, but are termites?" It is not called "termites" because they have wings, and "ants" because they are black.

How can I tell you?

There are three points that distinguish termites and ants: antennae, wings, and torso.

Termites: The antennae does not refracted to the "ku", and the wings are almost the same size as all four. The torso is not constricted.
Ant: The antennae is refracted to the "ku", and the forehead is larger than the hind wings. The torso is constricted.

How to distinguish termites and ants
Left: Termites, right: Ant

If it was an ant...

Many ants walk around the house, causing discomfort and rarely bite people.
Most of them enter the room in search of food from the outdoors, but in this case, clean the glues of food such as sugar and sweets that have fallen on the floor and store the food in a closed container, so that ants will not pass.
Depending on the type, nests may be created indoors (such as the back of wallpaper or behind a closet). If you do not know the location of the nest, use a poisonous agent for ants (can be purchased at home centers, etc.). Ants take the medicine as food and take them back to the nest, so they can eliminate all ants in the nest.

If it were termites...

It is a major pest in wooden buildings. Damage is mainly caused by damp wood and two species, "quisite ants" and "Yamato termites" that inhabit the soil, and damages the lower members (especially near bathrooms and kitchens).
Recently, damage has been reported in various places, such as "America Kansail ants", which make tunnels on dried wood and furniture, has been reported in various places. If sandy objects (termite dung) falls on the floor even though you are cleaning every day, you may be damaged by this Kansailant.
If termite damage progresses, it can cause buildings to collapse during an earthquake or typhoon.

How can I get rid of it?

Searching for nests and using ant drugs require specialized knowledge, so we recommend that you ask a specialist for extermination. If you would like to request removal, please contact Health and Welfare Center Health Sanitation Division.

How can I prevent it?

It is important as a fundamental measure to prevent ant construction and ant treatment of soil at the time of new construction.
If there is wood or waste wood left in the garden, dispose of it. Termites nesting there may attack the house. Repair the area where there is a leak or water leak as soon as possible.
