The topography and the place name of Izumi Ward

Shunno Ohashi (meeting's chairperson of Izumi Ward history, Doctorate in Literature)

Izumi Ward is administrative and belongs to Yokohama-shi, and Sagamihara plateau lengthens geographically from the north to the south in the west across Sakai River located at the south end of Tama hill.

Called that this area came to belong to Kanagawa with Sagami country Kamakura county before that about (1868) September in 1868, and it was 84 in Kamakura county, or there was village. In Kamakura county, in the east, the west did Koza-gun and boundary (boundary) in the Sakai River close to Musashi country. Akuwa, the east side of both Okazu villages become boundary of Musashi country and Sagami country after peak. In April, 1889, the municipalities system was spread, and, as for Akuwa, Okazu, Kamiyabe, Naze, Akiba, Nakagawa-mura, Nakata, Izumi, Kamiiida, Shimoiida made neutralization Tamura, and as branch Akuwa river of the Kashio River flowed through the center of village, by one of the former name of a village of Nakata, Izumi, Iida did Wada with the name of a village in Nakagawa-mura, and the name of a village came to be called Izumi, Wada-mura in Okatsu, Nakagawa-mura.

Established village was admitted into Yokohama-shi with the sixth area expansion of Yokohama-shi in April, 1939, and it was Totsuka Ward with municipalities name of Tozuka, Seya, the upper part of a river, Toyoda, Hongo, Taisho, but both Okazu, Shimbashi towns did share ward with the enforcement of "the regulations about reorganization of Totsuka-ku, Yokohama-shi" in Hetian Region and Nakagawa districts during November, 1986, and it was Izumi Ward in this way. By the way, in the northern part, cage Akuwa-cho (the existing Seya Ward), the southern part (lower Akuwa) of Yokohama-shi admission became Shinbashi-cho in Akuwa, Nakagawa-mura. Name of a street of Shinbashi-cho comes from bridge name of the location.

Izumi Ward is compound area of both middle Wada, Nakagawa districts, and the topography is largely strange with development now, but, in Nakagawa district, there is, so to speak, much intense valley region of ups and downs called Tando whereas middle Hetian Region is land so that Sugo valley (sugoyato), keirintani (keirinyato), the place name called Ryoke valley (ryokeyato) show.

From the plateau top that turned to to the ex-east and south along the Sakai River and Izumi River, Akuwa River in low land in the Jomon culture times a lot of house trace and earthenware vessel, stone implements in the Yayoi Culture times excavation or people having come to live a life in this ground as was discovered, and was reported as excavated stone implement in the no earthenware vessel times from the back of Yahata Shinto shrine of (with something) for the neighborhood of Wada south elementary school and the town water supply official in Izumicho for more than 10,000 years.

Hongo leaving character name in Shimoiida-cho is assumed with Hongo of kozagun*teikyo formed around Kamiiida, Shimoiida in the Nara era ("geography will charges in Japan"). Around both Shimbashi, Okazu towns seemed to belong to Oshimago in those days. In addition, of spirit of a dead person Shrine who Nakata (Kazurano) of the Heian era is common to Muraoka-go, and is enshrined when think because exist, is feudal tenure of Kajiwara. Kajiwara assumed Kamakura right Goro Kagemasa father, and the grandchild view head of Kagemasa did Kajiwara with the nature.

It is about after Kamakura era that the place name comes out to ancient documents clearly, and, as for the place name of Okazu, Iida is seen in document possessed in Kamakura Hachiman shrine and Eifuku temple of (1298) in 1298 in (1270) December in 1270. There were many rice fields, so it was condition that was essential for feudal lord securing of rice field that was common to both areas. According to the ancient documents, handenshirokiyomeshu, the family of handenfujigoroka* and others live in tasaishonii*, ko*sanrohidarieimoniinari, Iida as lord of a manor in Okazu, and it is said that spring Kojiro may be the whole family of Iida. Okazu had rice field of eight eight towns (about 9 hectares) at that time. As rice field is not developed land for overnight, you may consider that there has been already at end of the Heian era.

In Kamakura, one was place of strong position that used difficulty ku nature which it was easy to protect to attack called the sea among mountains in Mikata. There were seven sunken roads to enter Kamakura, and there were east way (lower way), way of the inside, west way (upper way) from Kamakura on way which knew district. Way (upper way) of city went along Iida soon. It is that that is called Kamakura way and built way now. We entered Sagami country after Nichiren departed in worth country black horses, and point went on west way (upper way) ("Nichiren holy priest note written praise to a painting"), and there seemed to be street that ranged to turning point and east and west which did in around Iida from person, Iida to Iida via Hiratsuka, four no shrine, Ichinomiya.
